Some programs blocked from install

some, but not all, programs fail to install. I get no error, merely a short
pause in computer processing, when no other windows can be opened or
accessed. usually, if I shut down windows the program will try to install.
some program is blocking the setup from running, but it's not my firewall,
virus or spyware protection. I'm a little dubious about randomly killing
running processes to find the culprit, so if anyone can recommend a likely
suspect, I'd appreciate it.

one further point. I can install these programs in safe mode, but they still
do nor run, though perhaps for a yet different reason.

Rand McNally trip maker fails with no error, but will try to install during
shutdown.

Nero DVD burning software installed with no problem, but may have been
related to an installation of a new DVD writer.

Nero is filled with unpredictable problems. But reinstalling it might help
or using a dvd burnersoftware that is compatiable to your new device.

The other however might be an old program that still depends on an
autoexec.bat file, stacks, buffers, or something. It's my guess that as an
atlas, it may have thousands of graphical images and may require to allocate
memory or space for them but cannot because of winxp's security. You might
want to research it's parent site for an update or patch. But, i recall of
a long shot that might work.

There is the ability to right click on the setup.exe file and select a
compatibility mode for old software. Maybe this might help get it
installed. Another trick would be to see if you can copy the contents of
the cd into a temp folder, then proceed to install the program from the temp
folder. If not then try installing via safe mode from that temp folder....

If by chance the program can run directly from the cd, without an install,
then you can simply copy the cd into a folder and run the executable file
from your desktop....

Well, Tripmaker is sort of Win98 vintage. I tried copying the cd to an
external hard drive, and running setup in compatibility mode, but wound up
with setup running as a process only, without install progress. I'll try the
vendor, but I am not certain the program is supported.

thanks for your suggestions.

Something interesting occurred this morning. HP came back with two alerts
for printer software. the first installed immediately, but the second never
did. it tried to as the computer was shutting down, which of course means
something is blocking some incarnations of setup but not others...

In the end, there seems to be some service blocking some setup programs from
running. If I pin it down I'll post the result here. I am simply killing
processes one by one until the install kicks off. so far I haven't
identified the culprit.
