Some help please, for newbie Web build, free software.

Hi there,

Greetings to all, I wish to create my first Web site, first time for
everything, I suppose.. Now my 'Freeware' sages, I wish to do this
completely using 'Freeware', but there's 'Free' and then there's
alt.comp.freeware's, 'Free' and that's for
me, I'm using Nvu, quite brilliant, though one or two quirks, typical of
brilliance IMHO, seems to like re-laying the code all the time and like me,
gets
confused 8~), 'Save' and 'Paste' are also a bit quirky, but I've achieved
good results. I have Emailed Nvu about this. Onto my requests: (1) A local
click type counter, with perhaps
simple analysis. (2) A local search facility, fast would be nice, for
searching my own, local database type, pages. (3) Any dependable 'Free' Web
space out there for the UK, without lots of adverts etc? About 5Mb would be
nice. (4) A good, local
lock, so that only I can modify my HTML code. (5) Is Nvu OK to upload.. I
know, only one way to find out 8~(,
is to do a test run!
My Web site is to be of a 'socially acceptable' type and best of all, also
'Free', many thanks for your thoughts, keep up the good work folks, in much
appreciation, Michael.

Search the web - there are a lot of them out there. (HTML editing
program authors don't supply things like this.)
(2) A local search facility, fast would be nice, for

See above. You have to know whether you'll be using php, asp, etc. It
involves a bit of programming.
(4) A good, local lock, so that only I can modify my HTML code.

Your site will be password protected. Don't tell anyone the password
- and make it a good one.

Thank you Al Klein, for your response.

Your right I've already done this and there are a few, but is there a 'Free'
one that this NG recommends?

I would need to just search one of my HTML (all be it, quite large one),
page. All my data would simply be on that page, can you recommend something
'simple' for me, I've 'machine Coded' (successfully), 6502 CPU in the
'distant' past, will that help 8~)

That's the information I needed, many thanks.

This is a good one. All features on that page.
You pick the style, colors and counter start.

That was answered.

Port 5.Com Don't know where they are located but free 15megs. (Always
watch your input/output.) I used to use them. Very dependable. No ads.
Your address would be http://www.yoursite.port5.com. You may not have to
use the www (e.g. http://yourname.port5.com) Not sure.

(4) A good, local
lock, so that only I can modify my HTML code.
That was answered. Sort of.
Your server might have the ability to lock certain directories.
If it does you can figure out your own security for your working files. If
that is what your mean.

(5) Is Nvu OK to upload.. I
Your FTP client probably(?) has the ability to edit your files on the
server from your computer. Mine does.
know, only one way to find out 8~(,
is to do a test run!
My Web site is to be of a 'socially acceptable' type and best of all, also

This looks ideal, do they download their software into my PC or do they just
add their software into my Home Web page at my Host's server, does it
'call home' at all, a type of 'Spy ware'?

I've had a quick look at this, it also looks also ideal, thanks.

Thanks for a very good response Daryl, this is all very new to me, but I'll
have a go.

You put a link to their site on your page - that's all there is. Read
the FAQ #3.

I have two 'accounts' with them. All you do is add the HTML which looks
something like this:

<img src="http://www.counting4free.com/cgi-bin/counter.pl?id=XXXXX"
alt="Counter" />

Okay. It's (x)HTML. Almost the same.
I'm not sure if it phones home but you will phone them each time that page
is open. They seem to be up and up and have never been spammed that I know
of.
The five 'X's are your counter id.

You are finding out writing web pages is addictive. Ask Susan. She written
a million of them.
Give me a write if you have more questions or need a hand with anything.

Much appreciated folks, I'll try and sort problems out as they arise,
best way to learn in my opinion. But if I get up a proverbial creek, without
a neuron, I'll have no hesitation in calling, such a decent NG. See you
soon, keep well, regards Michael.
