Some Folders Share, Some Don't

G

glamart

Before SP2, I set up a group of folders to share between 2 PCs, both
WinXP Pro, with a router. All folders that were marked for sharing
worked fine. When SP2 was installed, any new folder marked for
sharing (w/appropriate permissions) shows up in the share list but
when trying to access, get the "folder not accessible...etc."
message.

Even though both PCs are identical, I call the PC primary which has
a cable modem attached. The primary PC can access all shared folders
on the secondary, but the secondary PC has the problem accessing
some new folders on the primary PC.

Any thoughts? Thanks

Start by checking for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls (including SP2 ICF),
and for registry setting restrictanonymous, on both computers.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, and we'll diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from
experience.

Thanks for the fast response Chuck! The links have much info which
will take a while to explore. My network is still working OK since
most of the shared folders on the primary PC are accessible to the
secondary PC, so the network functions. Firewalls and
restrictanonymous
don't seem to be the problem. I disabled Zone Alarm and verified
that ICF is also disabled. Restrict Anonymous is set to "0".

I am getting a "registry entry can't be read" error 5 when I run
browstat
status on my primary PC. (see file below - If you have any idea what
error 5 is, please advise.) The browstat file on the secondary PC
shows "Unable to retrieve server list from MARIE: 64". This is
strange since I do not get this error when I run browstat status
with no log file. IE, browstat status>browstat.txt contains the
error, browstat status (display) does not and lists the domain and
servers.

OK, an "error = 5" is access denied.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-5-aka-access-denied.html>

You'll get "error = 5" from a firewall or restrictanonymous problem, or a file
sharing setup problem. You need to consider ZA as a candidate for the cause.
Disabling ZA is not always successful; you may need to either un install it
(using all instructions from ZoneLabs), or configure it properly.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>

You also should look at file sharing. You have a pair of XP Pro computers. Are
they running Simple, or Classical, File Sharing? If Classical, using Guest or
non-Guest authentication? This makes a major difference; Guest authentication
will give "error = 5" in browstat, guaranteed. As will non-Guest accounts, with
inadequate authorisation.

Chuck,

My pc's do the same thing after sp2 install. If the above problem is the
same-- only "system" directories cannot be opened (windows, program files,
and some directiories it the docs and settings directory) from another pc on
the network. The message at the bottom says that the options are grayed out
because it is being used by the system. all 3 of my pcs worked fine until
the sp2 upgrade.

Nothing has changed-- same fw. I've even tried unchecking the simple file
sharing option and tried giving rights the "hard" way and still cannot access
these directories.

Perhaps this changes things, or perhaps I'm an idiot and should shut up:)

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from
experience.
My email is AT DOT
actual address pchuck mvps org.

(see file below - If you have any idea
what
error 5 is, please advise.) The browstat file on the secondary PC
shows "Unable to retrieve server list from MARIE: 64". This is
strange since I do not get this error when I run browstat status
with no log file. IE, browstat status>browstat.txt contains the
error, browstat status (display) does not and lists the domain and
servers.

Thanks for the offer to look at status logs following:

OK, an "error = 5" is access denied.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-5-aka-access-denied.html>

You'll get "error = 5" from a firewall or restrictanonymous
problem, or a file
sharing setup problem. You need to consider ZA as a candidate for
the cause.
Disabling ZA is not always successful; you may need to either un
install it
(using all instructions from ZoneLabs), or configure it properly.

You also should look at file sharing. You have a pair of XP Pro
computers. Are
they running Simple, or Classical, File Sharing? If Classical,
using Guest or
non-Guest authentication? This makes a major difference; Guest
authentication
will give "error = 5" in browstat, guaranteed. As will non-Guest
accounts, with
inadequate authorisation.

Thanks Chuck
Sounds like I have an un-solvable problem. I'm definitely using
simple file sharing. The firewall can be disabled by either shutting
it down or by setting the Zone program switches to low (off). I have
checked the settings in the trusted zone (if you are familiar with
Zone Alarm) and all of the IPs look OK. However, I will look into
the firewall some more. I have to work on this problem when the
machines are not in use and I can't pull them down for any length of
time by uninstalling a firewall. I am only trying to share 2 new
data folders on an E: drive and I can move the data to folders that
will presently share. All other shared folders on C, D & E share OK.
Again, thanks for all of the info.

Chuck

Dan

Dan,

If you're an idiot, it's for thinking that these problems can't be solved.
Maybe one individual problem can't be solved, from time to time, but if we see
enough people with a problem, or with a group of different problems, maybe we
can find a pattern, and eventually a common cause.

I know that I worked with you (or somebody using the nym / address "Dan
<[email protected]>") in the past. This being Usenet, I haven't
been able yet to retrieve enough of our(?) conversations to see what we learned
from your problem. If we learned anything.

All Windows Networking problems are solvable, given enough time and diagnoses.
Particularly ones which can be identified as starting with a specific set of
changes (in your case, application of SP2).

Maybe we'd all benefit if you would be so kind as to restate your problem, in
another thread, with a unique and descriptive Subject. Give us a chance, maybe
we can all learn from your experience.

and for registry setting restrictanonymous, on both computers.

OK, if you're running SFS, there's the cause for the "error = 5" in browstat.
SFS, and Guest, does NOT give you administrative access, which you need to open
the registry from browstat.

One problem down. Let's work on one problem at a time.

Now, what specific folders are you trying to share and can't? Can you share
other folders on that same computer?

Thanks Chuck
Sounds like I have an un-solvable problem. I'm definitely using
simple file sharing. The firewall can be disabled by either
shutting
it down or by setting the Zone program switches to low (off). I
have
checked the settings in the trusted zone (if you are familiar with
Zone Alarm) and all of the IPs look OK. However, I will look into
the firewall some more. I have to work on this problem when the
machines are not in use and I can't pull them down for any length
of
time by uninstalling a firewall. I am only trying to share 2 new
data folders on an E: drive and I can move the data to folders
that
will presently share. All other shared folders on C, D & E share
OK.
Again, thanks for all of the info.

OK, if you're running SFS, there's the cause for the "error = 5"
in browstat.
SFS, and Guest, does NOT give you administrative access, which you
need to open
the registry from browstat.

One problem down. Let's work on one problem at a time.

Now, what specific folders are you trying to share and can't? Can
you share
other folders on that same computer?

The primary PC shares folders on drives C, D & E with no problem.
The problem that I have is that when I create a new folder to share
on the E drive, this folder appears on the list but is not
accessible. There is something in this PC that prevents new folders
from being shared - very strange - I can't find firewall or other
settings that will selectively allow some folders to share and
prevent access to other folders on the same drive. File sharing and
permissions are the same for all folders setup to share. Both PCs on
the network are setup the same with one user on each PC having
administrative privilege. The secondary PC shares all drives and
folders (setup to share) with no problem.

OK, this starts to sound familiar. You're running Simple File Sharing, and
you're creating new shares with inappropriate permissioning (not your fault).

There is a workaround for this problem. You can't change permissioning under
Simple File Sharing, but, if you disable Simple File Sharing, you will be able
to examine permissioning for the shares, and for the NTFS folders. This is a
Simple task under XP Pro. Be glad that you don't have XP Home in this case!

Please disable SFS, then check Sharing - Permissions (Sharing) and Security
(NTFS) for the problem folders. Compare the observations there with the
properly acting shares. Also, if these are not the root folders, examine NTFS
permissions for the parent folders.

If you will very diligently examine the noted settings for both the problem, and
for comparable non-problem, folders, I suspect that you will see where the
problem lies. If you can describe your findings, we might even see a permanent
solution.

Chuck your are a genius!
I had made a dumb mistake when I set permissions - I setup the
"security" items with a typo and didn't properly add "Everyone".
That's what happens when one is stressed out. All is fine now. Thank
you for your persistence :)
