Some emails won't open attachments

Some emails won't open attachments from people that I know. I get a message:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Ceate an association in the set associations control panel. I do
not know how to do this. Can anyone help me. This just started to happen in
early Oct.

Thank You.

What type of attachment file is it, DOC, PPS, JPG, XLS?

Can you save the attachment, and then open the saved document
outside of Windows Mail?

Hi Gary,

Thanks for responding so quickly. The attachments that won't open all are:
PPS. I did not try to save them and open them outside of Windows Mail. I
don't know how to do that, I'm not very computer literate.

Hi Gary,

I just tried to save one of the attachments. They are suppose to be
pictures from Austria sent to me by my cousin. It came in as Austira.pps and
I save it as Austria.jpg because attachments that end in jpg I could open.
But I don't know where to find it !!!!

Thanks Again.

DO NOT change the type of extension of a file, because you will
never be able to open that file. To save an attachment, click File,
Save Attachments. At the bottom of the window that pops up is the
location where that file will be saved. You can change that location
by clicking the Browse button. Once the attachment is saved, for
example, in the Documents folder, navigate to that folder and
double-click on that PPS file. In order to open PPS files, you must
have either PowerPoint or the free PowerPoint viewer installed. If you
have neither, go here:

Once you have confirmed you can open that file outside of Windows Mail,
there is a fix for being to able to open it inside Widows Mail:

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your advise. I did save the attachment for one of the emails
with the pps extension in the Documents and was able to open it. So I
proceeded to fix the problem with the link you provided. It took me to
"ReCure" which was the free download. It found 856 errors and automatically
fixed 1. To fix the others, it wanted me to register for the full version of
"ReCure" at a cost of $39.95. Would you recommend that I do that.

I tried to open the attachment in Windows Mail after I used "Recure" (Free
Version) and it still wouldn't open.

What do you suggest I do. Is the price worth it. I have Norton's 360
installed on my computer.

Thanks,

Nadia

My advice when sending anyone to the link that Gary correctly gave you, is
to ignore the 2 google ads, you obviously clicked on one of them.

You do not need that software offered.

Go back to the site that Gary gave you, and read beyond the Google Ads.

You also need to remove Norton too, but not yet, let's get your pps file
association sorted first.

The first rule of safe computing is to ignore ads.
Read and follow only the editorial matter on that page.

Hi Mac,

Thanks. I just clicked on the first option that I saw and it said a free
download for the pps cure. My cousin came in town today who is very compter
literate and helped me with the directions that Gary gave me. It's a good
thing because in the instructions, it didn't say that you have to expand the
files. So he showed me how to do that (I hope I remember that in the future)
and now everything works great.

Thanks.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for all your help. Mac or Steve replied to me also. I followed your
directions and like I told Mac (Steve) luckily my cousin from out of town
came to visit today and helped me. He is very computer literate. I wouldn't
have know that I had to expand the files during one of the steps. Everything
works great now. Thanks for your wonderful advice as always. You are really
great and I appreciate everything you have helped me with in the past and
present.

Thanks again.
