I recently had a problem whereby the only user name to display in the
Windows Task Manager was "SYSTEM" for the "System Idle Process", all
other User Name column entries were empty or hidden.
I found the solution to this problem by looking at Windows Task
Manager help on the User Name column. It seems the names are only
displayed when they can be retrieved from the owning Terminal Services
session. I had the Terminal Services service disabled for reasons
similar to those provided on
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm#Terminal_Services.
Setting the service to launch 'Manually' and restarting it fixed the
issue.
This post is to help others who have encountered the same problem, as
during my initial search to find a solution I noticed many other
unanswered posts on the same topic.
