Solaris 10

What is the most compatible hardware for solaris 10 other than hardware
from sun ? I want to build a desktop with solaris 10 What is the
optimal hardware configuation that would ensure seamless software
installation? While sun offers desktops such as ultra 20, what other
hardware are tested to be fully functional for solaris 10 ? I want to
build a desktop that would primarily have solaris 10 as the operating
system. The hardware's compatibility for other operating systems are
unimportant. what processor? Preferably a dual core amd or intel
processor ... Is there any other choice that is equally affordable ?
what motherboard ? Must be a motherboard that supports dual core and
has an architecture friendly for solaris and must be available off the
shelf. what DVD+ R/W drive ? Is there an affordable optical drive
alternative ? what graphics card ? what media reader ? a 5 in 1 ? a 13
in 1 ? what montor ? a 17" LCD... but which brand ? what else ?

Seems to me that if they make the operating system for PCs, don't
they publish a hardware compatibility list? I doubt that would be a
complete answer and I'm not trying to discourage you from asking
here on USENET. I am mainly curious.

I run Solaris 10 on supermicro mob P3TDDE. I was able to install on P6DBE as
well. Generally the newer the mob the better chance is that it will work.
My both mobs are quite old (P6DBE is very old it still has an ISA slot). I
have nVidia cards and you can get a nVidia driver for Solaris.
I use it as a headless PC i.e. no display and no keyboard. I runs my web
server, NFS server and mail server as a server machine nothing comes close.

Forgot to mention that there is a special utility that you can run on your
PC and it will tell you how well it will run Solaris. It's an ISO image
about 70 MB that probably you can find on Solaris web site.

it should satisfy your curiosity

Dear Ter,

Thanks for your reply. I will look up information on super micro.
Essentially I want to work around an amd deskotp processor, preferably
64 bit, which is what is easily available as an alternative to spark.

You already got some v.good answers from other members. The link below
is the one I had in Bookmarks. Solaris lists 8 mb's (mostly Skt.939) on
full approval list but note a few things: The ECS board shown [Lite] has
no Firewire support (in particular, 'spec-b' 800 Firewire). This brand
has some fine deals on boards but has had a few issues with QC. For the
gigabyte board shown [Ultra 9], check to see it has the opt. PCIe
feature. The Tyan MB listed by Sun [S2892] is a two-CPU-Socket board. A
better choice, certified by Tyan for use with Solaris, is the 'S2866'
which, I understand, is fine with dual-core Athlon 64. I'll probably end
up using this Tyan. I'm not big on Asus, even though they offer a lot of
features. Not familiar with the ASrock or Via boards. Please follow-up
on your results, as I am looking into using Solaris/AMD. Just have to
snatch a few more purses..

Dear OSbandito,

Thanks for suggesting tyan board, I looked up the tyan website as also
the hcl link that you have given for motherboards, i went into details
of this board as well as other asus boards. You have expressed some
reservation on asus boards... Any specific reason, or any known issue
with asus boards, if I am to use a amd processor ?

And by the way what is the difference between Solaris 10 and Solaris
Express ?

( Some of my questions must be very basic .... )

Hi

My first post here.

I am a novice user.

Is it possible to run a Solaris virtual machine on a 32-bit CPU using VMWare
or other emulator?
Maybe this is a possible alternative to buying 64-bit hardware?

Keep on hacking...

Solaris 10 is the biggest "HAS BEEN" in the entire
computer industry. Why on earth would you want
to do that? Take that stupid OS, and bench Math
CAD on it and WinXP, and you'll see XP kick its
pants off.

Dear Johns,

Why would you say that ?

I am certainly someone who consider microsoft as a corporation that is
one of the largest reasons why personal computer has made so much
progress. I also endorse your views on WinXp and you haven't mentioned
Vista, yes, windows is a wonderful operating system.

But such a harsh opinion of Solaris ? For a start, it is a secure
operating system, it is kind of made of networking, and it is becoming
more and more perfect....

Setting aside the sharpness in the tone of your message, you must have
your own reasons why you call Solaris 10 a "HAS BEEN", a "stupid"
operating system. And you have metioned CAD as the benchmark test, is
your opinion based solely on running CAD on solaris 10 or are there any
other reasons ?

Dear Dale,

The purpose is to design the most compatible hardware for solaris 10.
Yes, VMware is an option if the search is to find a way of installing
solaris 10 as one of the multiple O/s. But I am trying to have it as
the Dominant O/S.

Thank you.

on a sound, expert technical background or does it simply reflect the
impressions of an occasional user ?

Hi shiva, I'm something of a beginner myself. My take on Solaris
Express is that you sign up for it to receive monthly updates/changes to
the Solaris 10 OS. I don't know whether these updated files are
considered stable or not. As for Asus, they do put out some cool
products but I've read in several places that their responsiveness to
customer support requests has been poor. In addition, Dave and one or
two other experienced guys on this board have had problems with
reliability of some of the Asus board models. Beyond this, I don't
really know if their products are any better than the competition.

Shiva--I screwed up a little bit. The Tyan S2866 mb I wanted costs over
$200. Will have to look for a much cheaper alternative.

The other options are intel and asus boards. But you are saying that
ASUS is not good on customer support... But Asus seems to offer boards
loaded with features at a good price.
