Software Updates..

I have something new when I left mouse click on Start.

It's Software Updates.

The shortcut points to:

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe"

From my research I've found this:

Isuspm.exe is a program which may have been installed by you when you
installed other software programs. This is a program which is from a
company called Macrovision. The purpose of this program is to check for
the latest updates from Macrovision products.

I would like to remove this if I can since I wasn't given the choice to
install it since I'm not sure where it came from but I notice it tries
to dial out when I start Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning which I installed a
few days ago.

I can't find where it is loading from. It's not in msconfig nor is it in
the registry settings: Run, RunOnce, RunServices, or RunServicesOnce.

It's also not in the StartUp folder.

It's not malware or spyware from what I've read but I don't need it!

Yes, I always disable this also. And yes, it does come with software like
Roxio. You can also set Roxio not to automatically check for updates from
within Roxio itself. ISUSPM.exe *does* start from the registry and you can
usually find it under:

HKEY>Current User>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run

The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup -

I guess I didn't look close enough because it is exactly where you said
it was. Just delete the key? Just right mouse click on it and select Delete?

Then can I just delete the Software Updates shortcut I found when I left
mouse click on Start?

And you are correct about Roxio. Under Tools, I can set many Options,
one being check for updates.

Thanks!

It would be better, and cleaner, to turn off updates in Roxio. That
also has the advantage of verifying that it's Roxio doing the calling.
That should change the registry entry too.

Using Autoruns I was able to disable ISUSPM from starting with Windows
although I also had to go into Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning and disable
it from checking for updates when it started.

And I deleted the shortcut to Software Updates in my Start menu.

It also installed itself into Control Panel which is bull$hit. I was
able to determine it is Roxio doing this.

Everything seems to be OK except the Software Updates icon in Control
Panel which I've decided to leave should I ever need to deal with this
crapware again.

All I wanted was a simple program to burn DVDs and CDs, not some useless
Software Update program. From what I can tell, the only update to Roxio
Easy CD & DVD Burning is to purchase the full program.

Good job. Now go into the Control Panel applet and change the update
settings there to only check manually (which will be Never!). Having the
Control Panel applet will not hurt.

I was hesitant to do that since it dials out but I let it do it's thing
then set it all to manual. That should take care of it. I just don't
like software that installs software without asking me. Not a good thing.

Thanks again for your help!
