Software transfer to new machine

I have a failing laptop where every other time I boot it, it says Operating
System not found. I need to get the MS Office software off there and onto a
replacement laptop. That's all I want off the old system. I bought the
software legally from a store, so I am not trying to rip off MS. When I
moved some MS software for my aunt last year, MS told me to load everything
from CD's and then phone the activation place to get activated. I wish there
was some simpler way to do it because I cannot find all the CD's and because
when I call MS they give you the 3rd degree interrogation about why you are
moving the software. What I want to do is to point some utility at my
computer, have all the MS Office stuff including reg entries burned onto a
DVD or external USB druve, and the load it on to the new laptop. Any ideas
please??

If you're getting an "Operating System" not found, that sounds like an MBR
problem OR the boot record (the one that contains information about loading
NTLDR) is gone. I suspect the first one, cause this message is generally
reported by the BIOS. If NTLDR or any of the actuall OS files are missing,
you would get a message such as:
1) Can't find NTLDR...,
2) OR \%systemroot%\system32\YADAY YAYA is missing or corrupt.

I would suggest installing a "Parallel Installation". If this works, then
you should be able to reboot and from the boot menu (contained in boot.ini),
select the OLD OS, not the installation/upgrade option (I beleive the choice
you want would be the Second one on the boot menu).

This link should help: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316941

PS: If installing a Parallel install, just select the very BASIC options,
you don't care about networks, options, games or anything else. You just
want the boot loader replaced.

Hope this helps.

You can't "MOVE" it. If you lost everything that you need to install it
with and anything that could be used to prove you own it so as to aquire
replacement media, you don't have a leg to stand on.

Also Ron.

When (if) you get this system up and running (presumably following my
previous post if it' correct), then you can use the Settings and Transfer
Wizard to transfer to the new macine pretty much anything you need to.
Please note, that the SAT Wizard does have it's problems, so check the new
machine for functionality before you toast the old one.

Finally, when you next have a functional machine, you should create
Emergency Boot Disk" and if you are running something like Diskeeper, create
a bootable Recovery and Repair CD/DVD.

I realize this is kinda like "The horse and Barn Door", but perhaps for the
future.

This is not going to solve the OP's problem. First, his hard drive
and/or motherboard is probably going and so this is not an MBR/NTLDR
missing problem. Second, the Files & Transfer Wizard won't move his
programs. He would need to install MS Office onto the new hard drive.
He can't do that without the installation CD's and the product key. If
he doesn't have them, he is SOL. He'll need to purchase the program or
use something less expensive such as OpenOffice.

You must have the installation CD, there's no other way to
"transfer" an Office application from one computer to another.

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you cannot legitimately transfer it to a
new computer, anyway, so you'll have to purchase another license.

You're out of luck. There's no way to do what you want. To move software
form one machine to anoter, you have to uninstall it from the old, and
reinstall it on the new. If you've lost the CDs you need to buy them again.

paertially correct. I suppose your have an iso windows onto your failing
laptop, and you want to recup it, or office tts the same isssue. DL
knoppix, tts a linux cd you can use to boot from , when started you can
copy whatever you want to CD, DVD, usb keys etc... You will have to
reinstall your office . You can always DL office from somewhere if MS
cannot help you, or your seller place....
