I'm looking for software so that I can see what's inside a compressed
file, rars particularly, before opening. Zipgenius does this but
doesn't support .rar. Most other programs I've checked don't seem to
have that option.

Dansheen,

IZArc (http://www.izarc.org/download.html) will do RAR's, and about
fifty other compression types too.

Iceows will do it:

Be aware though, that if you attempt to unpack a multipart rar with
parts missing Iceows will seize and peg the CPU for a few minutes. It's
my only complaint with this comparatively small and snappy program.

I'm not sure I was clear about what I'm looking for. I use izarc and
have no trouble opening/extracting rar files. If izarc does this I
haven't figured out how- I just want to view inside a rar file at its
contents before I extract it.

Thanks. I'm downloading now. From the description it looks like it
might work.

The program actually extracts the files you're looking at to a
temporary location, then deletes them when it's done.
