Is thier any type of software in the freeware area that will send an
alert to remind someone of an appointment..maybe working in conjuntion
with a calendar program...

I need something that will pop up a window reminding me ahead of time
of appointments...

My favorite is ClockX. Has a nice floating clock with skins, simple
calendar(maybe too simple for you), simple popup reminder with or without
audible alarm.
