software from previous pc

hi there.

i've recently purchased a new dell pc to replace my compaq laptop which is
almost 5 years old. The pc i purchased came with windows vista. However, i am
not completely satisified with the os i have now, mainly due to the fact that
most of my pc games are not vista enabled.

When i bought my laptop back in 2002, it came with a genuine windows xp
software. Would i be able to use the xp software for installation onto my new
pc?

I do look forward to a reply.

thank you

If Windows came with the PC and even if you have a CD with Windows XP
supplied by the PC manufacturer, most likely it is an OEM copy of Windows
which is tied to the original PC and can not legally be used with the new
PC.

If XP came preinstalled on that laptop then it's an OEM version and by it's
license it cannot be transferred to a different computer.

Even with a retail version of XP, it might not run on the new laptop. Some
manufacturers are not providing XP drivers for some new models, particularly
for laptops. You need to visit the computer manufacturer's web site to see
if XP is supported on that laptop.
