Software for monitoring ADSL modem

R

Renan

Hello,

I installed ADSL service (600k download/300k upload) here at home, but the
service seems to be a bit faulty (browses for ~15 minutes then modem
loses sync, the only method to get it back is rebooting the modem), so I
would like to know if there exists any program for monitoring the
modem and that can generate usage charts of the network connection.

My ADSL modem is a Xavi x8121r (GlobespanVirata GS8100 chipset) router
(the built-in management interface doesn't work on Firefox).

Thanks!

Talk to your ISP tech support. You may need to set max MTU lower. Read
this for backgound info:

what you are saying is very strange....

Since the interface is Ethernet & router, the only thing you are doing by
restarting is resetting your computer, you are not affecting the modem.

I would agree with the other posters, you should contact your ISP support.

why would he be cutting the power from the router?
it should have a seperate power supply

Yes... and what happens when you turn that power off, and then turn it
on? The modem/router is reset..., just like that; sometimes this is
necessary ;-)

To the OP: You might test whether you can start a telnet session to the
router; in Windows go to Start|||Run, then enter "command" (W9x) or
"cmd" (W2K/NT/XP), in both cases without the quotes. Then in the
DOS-box type

telnet ###.###.###.### (where the ### are replaced by your IP-address),
then press enter!

You also may visit http://www.dslreports.com who have a few tests (also
to determine the MTU size you should use) and extensive forums!

I mean, restarting *THE MODEM* (toggling power).

I have. But the Telnet interface is junk (even the BACKSPACE-key doesn't
work) and apparently there exists no documentation on how to use telnet.

Renan;

Not to state the obvious but, do you have adsl line filters on all of
your phone equipment (inc facsimile)?

Once you get used to it it works quite nicely; backspace is working
perfectly on W2K in the telnet session, also Ctrl-H might work for
backspace. What flavor of Windows do you use?

Will take a look.

Good luck!!!

I use Linux. Backspace works OK in other servers, but this modem seems
to be so ... (adjective is lacking) that Backspace doesn't work.

Use DEL, or CTRL-H, or CTRL-\. One of them _should_ work.

Oh, and try "stty" and "stty -a" when you are connected, if it's there
it will tell you what character sequence will be treated as BS.

Cheers,

Read the original post again, John. "the only method to get it back
is rebooting the modem". Rebooting the modem definitely affects the
modem - it reboots it. Not ctrl-alt-del on the computer - rebooting
on the modem. Modems are controlled by internal computers which can
be rebooted (and are every time you turn the power to the modem on).

I don't remember your original post, but did you try the HTTP page on
the modem (assuming there is one)?

It works only in Internet Explorer, not on Firefox. With Firefox,
I can login on the modem (http://192.168.1.1) but it won't redirect me
to the main page.

If I directly access the URL for the main page
(http://192.168.1.1/hag/pages/home.ssi) some features work, but I can't
configure the features like the built-in firewall and the port
forwarding (this is a router modem).

The modem, as I said in my original post, is a Xavi x8121r
(GlobespanVirata GS8100 chipset).
