Can someone tell me what this is and what it's for and where it came from.
The first time I saw it was when my OE and Hotmail stopped working and
System Restore wouldn't restore. Do I need it and will it cause more
problems for me. I have had to a fresh install since the problems started
and I don't want it to happen again.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know what it's for but I just checked my system and the closest folder
I can find is labeled Software Distribution (no Service 2.0). Looking
through the folder it looks like it has something to do with WindowsUpdate.

I don't think it's a Microsoft product. It looks to me like a adware or
warez product. I suggest you clean it off and run several AV scans. I'll bet
you have received more trojans/adware/malware attacks since it is resident
on your machine.

I've never heard of it and if it is causing some of your programs you
regularly use not to run you have to get rid of it.

Regards,

How does it manifest itself on your system?

As far as manifesting itself , several days ago I booted my computer as
always and when I came back to it my desktop was changed, all my icons were
gone as well as most installed programs and my email program(OE) wouldn't
send and recieve. It was as if I had done a fresh install. Which I ended up
having to do. It may be coincidence but my C drive (300 gb Maxtor) wouldn't
format and I had to remove it. Need, ess to say this thing caused major
havoc. Can someone tell me the best and surest way to completely remove it?
Thanks for the responses.

Now I believe I understand what you are saying. You see that entry in
System restore for the name of a restore point? That's just the entry
made by windows update when an update is installed. It is not a program
in itself.

I've had two laptops in my company (both Dell's, Win XP SP 2) experience odd
things with this update. We have our users as Power Users, no admin access,
and as members of our domain (under Group Policy). These two users lost
access to their Desktop, My Computer, My Documents, etc. They could no longer
or much less save to these folders, when they try, they get:

"this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer automatic update"

If I go into system restore, and go prior to the Software Distribution
Service 2.0, then things return to normal. Eventually, though the updates are
kicking in and things are reverting back. Any one run into this problem?

:

That is not a specific update. It is the generic name that is shown in
system restore when any update is applied from windows update.
