So far, so good....maybe?

So the syndicated talkshow computer guru's are all agreeing on one
thing...Upgrading from XP to Vista is problematic but purchasing a new
machine with Vista pre-loaded on it seems to be fine.

And 2 gigs of memory works better then the suggested 512kb minimum.

And those darn PC vs Mac commercials..... They seem to have truth to them
after all.

But I must say I'm impressed with what I got for what I paid. It's light
years better then what we had back in the dark ages of personal computers.
Who doesn't remember all the IRQ conflicts when installing CD rom drives and
sound cards? Or better yet, the early days of networking.... I won't even
go there, it's too ugly, I'd rather discuss my ex-wife....

Did you ask the seller what kind of customer relief they offer if the Vista
OS fails in some way, such as not recognizing a device driver? You won't
like the answer.

Actually I've had no problems with my WalMart branded Compaq desktop. The "
learning a new OS (Vista) " is a bit annoying but other then that it's been
performing fine right out of the box. And being a WalMart item, there is no
store level support other then to bring it back within the specified time.
It just was so nice to purchase a system I didn't have to build myself and
go thru all the headaches of installation.

So to sum it all up, Windows still sucks but I'm a cheap mofo' so why not?

I'm glad you are not experiencing any problems, but what if you do? Some
computer manufacturers containing pre-installed Vista are releasing their
products with device drivers that are incompatible with Vista. The solution
offered by the retailers? Wait until Microsoft comes up with a fix in a
year or so. We can't help you.

Some cannot afford to be down that long.

Well you could always get another HD and load XP on it. Hard drives are dirt
cheap nowadays. If your mobo supports sata drives swapping back and forth
between drives would be a piece of pie. (cake if you're from Rio Linda,
California)

Make your original HD a slave drive and you can easily move saved documents
off it. That would be a quick way to get back up and running while you're
waiting for new drivers or software that's Vista friendly to become
available.

But most importunately, think about the kittens.

MS is not responsible for writing drivers for third party (read: almost all)
drivers. nVidia is responsible for writing their drivers. ATI is responsible
for writing their drivers. Intel is... well, you get the idea. I hope....

Maybe some of the drivers are not all that they could be, but on a
pre-installed system, everything will work.. the driver issue is changing
all of the time, especially the big issue of video drivers, to the point
where users are now getting more than basic svga resolution.. it will not be
too long before proper dual screen support is back, although in fairness,
Vista does have basic dual screen support anyway..

Many people are finding that Vista is not as bad as is said.. I will readily
admit that some hardware configurations are not playing ball with Vista, but
for those who are taking the time to get it right, I say 'way to go'..

and many others all work just fine.

I am very happy with the vista upgrade, glad i did it.

But i did use common sense, found all drivers for my hardware and software
before upgrading, installed a second drive for vista to go on to. backup of
all files.
unpluged 2 hard drives untill vista was installed, reconnected them after. I
can now boot vista or xp from the startup with f10 key, so far i have not had
a problem up and running from jan 30/2007 with 32 bit version and upgraded to
the 64 bit version when my disk arrived on feb 17/2007
