I need a quick fix for my ever-increasingly slow
processor. I don't know why it seems to have died a
death. The hard-disk isn't crammed or anything like! It's
taking me between 15 and 20 to start up XP then another
10 0r so to get online. No error messages or anything!
Please help!

Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
(Windows XP)
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Run Defrag.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.

If you have a third party firewall, try uninstalling it and installing
it again.

I recently had the same problem crop up and did everything I could think of
to fix it, even an in-place repair install to no avail. The problem turned
out to be Norton Utilities having been corrupted somehow. I had to uninstall
it and go through the registry and delete all files related to Norton and
Symantec. This was the 3rd or 4th time N.U. had screwed up my system, so I
am leaving it off and using AVG 6.0 now without any problems and it doesn't
take over my entire system like Norton does. The programs in N.U. are very
redundant to XP's own utilities and I see very little advantage to using it
anymore. I am sure I will have many fewer headaches. AVG is also free and a
very capable AV program.
