SMTP error: invalid response

I have configured a new Windows XP with SP2 to use either Outlook or Outlook
Express and get the same error when trying to send mail to SBC's DSL SMTP
server:
0x800CCC60 SMTP_RESPONSE_ERROR Invalid response

I can't for the life of me figure out what might be causing this. SBC is
offering to send the problem up to their billable SupportPlus service as they
say it's a problem with MS products, not their server. I have insured that the
authentication is configured properly and even used the SBC trouble shooting
wizard which configures the SMTP settings for you.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose this would be appreciated.

I definitely wouldn't go to the paid support option just yet...

What version of Outlook do you have? Could you turn on diagnostic logging
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and
post the OPMLog.log file after you get this error?

Hi Jeff..

Thanks for help in diagnosing this problem. I just got back to this computer.
It has Windows 2000 installed on it and so I don't see the optoin for enabling
logging as prescribed by the KB article. Is there another way to capture that
info in Windows 2000?

Thanks much

The Windows version is irrelevant. What version of *Outlook* do you have?
If you have *Outlook* 2000, see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q240347. The
relevant file in that case would be smtplog.txt.

Hi Jeff..

I know this has been a while but I've been out of town. Here are the contents
of the SMTP log file for Outlook 2000. Thanks for looking into this:

Here's your problem. It looks like you're trying to use the SBC Yahoo!
outgoing server without providing your SBC Yahoo! credentials.

That may be but we have placed the user id and password in Outlook account,
these are the same as the ones that succesfully allow us to log on to yahoo
sbc webmail. So why is Windows XP SMTP not passing these on properly? We also
tried same credentials with Thunderbird and that didn't work either, so it's
not specific to Outlook. Is this an SBC problem or a Windows XP TCP/IP
protocol stack problem?

Thanks

So, to make sure I understand, the username you're using is
(e-mail address removed), along with the SBC Global password, correct?

I think it may be neither. Open your account properties pages and select
the Outgoing Server tab. Do you have "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires
authentication" box checked?

yes we have the outgoing server requires auth required checked and we have
tried both "use same settings" and "log on using" to no avail

Have you tried creating a new mail profile?

And don't buy that crap from SBC saying they'll solve your problem for a
fee. You already PAY them for your SBC Yahoo! account.

Are you paying for your Yahoo account? The error message makes me think
that you're not - my understanding is that only paying "premium" customers
can use POP3 and their SMTP servers and that everyone else is limited to
the Web interface.

Since the OP said they have "SBC Yahoo!", then, yes they are paying for a
premium account.
