smlogsvc (performance logs and alerts) won't start on 2 DC's PLEASE HELP

I'm about to upgrade these DC's to Windows2003 and dcdiag is failing both on the systemlog test because the performance logs and alerts wont start on either of them. I found also that neither system had distributed link client or server running, both were set to manual (both started fine once I set them to automatic and started them though).

When I try to start the performance logs and alerts service I get a vague error telling me to refer to "service-specific error code 2003". I've checked the knowledge base and through our technet subscription and the only thing I have found is QB323735 but this article specifically states it only occurs with SP1 and SP2, both of these servers have SP4 on them (although when I discovered this problem I found one of the servers only had SP3 on it, I've since installed SP4 on it).

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet is to use the copy button on the event log error and paste it
into your reply. What is vague to you is usually important information to
someone else : )

Nevermind...Now they are both passing dcdiag. I found on eventid.net that if
you start perfmon manually, then start the performance logs and alerts
service it will correct the problem and it did. dcdiag is now clean and
performance logs and alerts now starts properly (but immediately quits as it
should).

thanks though
