Performance Logs & Alerts service

We have an SBS2000 server and the Performance Logs & Alerts service is set to
an Automatic startup however it will not remain running. It is possible to
start the service but it stops again within a minute with no errors and
nothing logged in the event log.

The service is logging on as the LocalSystem account.

Any ideas how I can troubleshoot this problem?

This is expected behavior. The service will start when required such as when
you start a counter log, etc.
