I know there are third party solutions for this, but I'm not sure if
this is somthing that Active Directory does out of the box.

I would like to use a smartcard to:

1- Log into the domain
2- encrypt files
3- lock workstations on card removal
4- set access to specific shares or directories based on whether the
card is inserted or not

I'm new to smartcard security, so I want to know what I'm capable of
with AD out of the box.

Thanks in advanced.

You can:

1. require for a user account in AD to logon only with a smartcard
2. This is not yet available for EFS, but you can use your own programs
through interfaces such as CAPICOM
3. Yes, this can bet set via group policy
4. No, this cannot be enforced in Windows.
