Smartcard Logon on standalone

I'd want to implemtent smart card logon on a stand alone workstation.
I'd rather not use third party software.
Using local security policy, I can specify that a smart card is required for
interactive logon, but how can I specify the pair user/certificate on the
smart card?

1. Open XP's "Help and Support Center".
2. In the Search box type: SMART CARD , and hit enter.
3. Click on "Enable smart card or other certificate authentication".

The informations providev by "Help and Support Center" aren't clear.
It's not clear for example if I can or cannot logon interactivly to a
workstation that is not member of an Active Directory domain. I'm interested
in this point.

Smart cards can only be used to log on to domain accounts, not local accounts.
