Smart quotes

I have been using Smart Quotes, both single and double (' and ") for quite
sometime but suddenly the initial or leading quote is down at the bottom
Spanish-style. What happened and how do I get them back up where they
belong in English?

Smart quotes depend on the language setting of the actual text where you
insert the quotes. Have you checked that the language setting of your text is
English? (via the Language option in the Status Bar or via Tools > Language >
Set Language).

Note that the language setting may sometimes change. For example, this may
happen if the option “Detect language automatically†in Tools > Language >
Set Language is turned on or if you paste text copied from another document.

Ahhhh. I also see a checkmark next to Detect Language Automatically. Now
it's gone. Let's see how that works. Many thanks!

Well I was actually typing French titles for my new iPod. It was a shock to
find that in copying a CD of a French opera, sung in French of course,
iTunes came up with the titles of the arias--in English! Trust me, opera
sounds a whole lot better in the original. The titles, too. Nobody would
have listened to Pavarotti singing "Your cold little hand" instead of "Que
gelida manina". I was typing the titles in Word, so I could get all the
accents and markings, then copying them to iTunes. I guess I might have
copied something back as the placement of the quote marks up or down is not
consistent from title to title.
