I work with a program that uses what they call "smart phrases". If you type
period followed by a name, like: ".pfabd" it will substitue user defined text
in its place.

Does word have a similar function? I tried using the macro function, but it
only allows you to have a two key shortcut which doesn't allow enough names.
Is it possible to have shortcuts that are more than two keys? Something like
"smart phrases"?

It is called "autotext" From the Tools menu, select "AutoCorrect Options"
AutoCorrect can also be used for replace something like you have with a
particular phrase.

Exploiting AutoCorrect
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/AutoCorrect.htm

AutoCorrect is closer to what you describe and may be more suitable for your
purposes, but AutoText is a very powerful feature as well. Among the
differences is the way the two types of entries are stored. AutoText can be
stored in a specific template (other than Normal.dot) so that it's available
only for documents based on that template (and another template could have a
different entry stored under the same name). Because they are stored in
templates, AutoText entries can be easily shared with other users (by
sharing the template).

Unformatted AutoCorrect entries are saved in machine-specific .acl files by
language; a given AutoCorrect entry is available only when the language at
the insertion point is the same as the language of the .acl file in which
the entry is stored. Although it is possible to "back up" and "restore" .acl
files, they are not easily shared.
