Had laptop in standby (closed lid). Upon starting again,
the window only fills about 1/2 the screen in the middle.
I shut down (completely, not restart option), and booted
again. It came up the same way with the reduced window. I
never changed any options or selections anywhere. Anyone
have an answer? Thanks.

Hi Bruce,

You haven't said what model your machine is. On my Dell Inspiron 8100, when
you change from the native 1600 resolution the screen goes small because the
text is clearer than it would be if the smaller screen was stretched to fill
the whole display. You can override this behavior with FN+F7.

Hello!
Have you tried in safe mode?

Not a computer nerd, so don't know what is safe mode. I'm
afraid any help would need to include specific
instructions re exactly what to do. Thanks.

It's a Latitude C800. I had made no changes to settings.
Had rebooted many times and it came up properly. Don't
know why it would come up different from what it was when
I was using it before shutdown.

Hi!
Start Windows, or if it is running, shut Windows down, and
then turn off the computer.
Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set
of instructions known as the Basic Input/Output System
(BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer.
Some computers display a progress bar that refers to the
word BIOS, while others may not display any indication that
this process is happening.
As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the
F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the
Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
Note: If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some
computers will generate a "keyboard error" message. Please
restart, and then try again.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select
the Safe mode menu item, and then press Enter.

Started in safe mode and the window opened at about 1/4
size of screen! Shutdown and started again and it opened
at about 1/2 size. Still not full screen.

A guess:

Sounds like the resolution has somehow been set to something below the
"native" resolution of your laptop display, and the laptop's graphics aren't
designed to interpolate to lower resolutions. (In other words, a display
that has, for example, 1024X768 pixels is being run at 640X480. It's mapping
the 640X480 into part of the screen - one pixel per pixel - and leaving the
rest dark.)

Right-click on the desktop. Select "properties". (Or, use the Display
control panel.)

Use the Settings tab. What resolution is selected? Set it back to the native
resolution. (Or, increase the resolution in steps until you get the full
screen image back. If the drivers are proper, the highest resolution you can
set should be the native resolution of the display.)

Good luck.
