Marcus

Hello,

Just Installed SP2 with no problems except when I play music in WMP the
Album/Artist details are not showing in the "Now Playing" tab just a blank.
Anyone noticed this, maybe the data provided AMG is down or doing an update.

I would appreciate if some one running XP pro SP2 could check theirs and get
back to me

Thanks

Marcus

I have SP2 and use WMP, and I have not seen such problems. Can you be a
little more specific so I can try to reproduce the problem? What options did
you change from default? Does it do it with songs known to have the
information in the tags?

Well before I upgraded to SP 2 when I played an album from my media library
I used to get media information in the now playing tab if I was on the
internet.

For example lets say I play a Stereophonics CD (Or MP3) an clicked on the
"Now Playing Tab" It would show me Artist Info or Album info depending on
which tab was selected, now it just has a blank screen.

I have tried switching both my firewalls off but it still doesn't work ??

Hope this is clearer, perhaps SP2 upgraded WMP 9 as well, hope I can sort it
as it was nice to read about artists as you listen to them.

Marcus

Yes, I reproduced it, you didn't mention that you had the "visualisation" set
to show "Info Centre View". One problem though - I cannot find a solution. At
least we know it isn't localised, so MS may be able to fix it if enough
people report it. I don't think WMP 9 was upgraded in SP2, it was just
included.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Quick update: WMP did change versions in the SP2 update, it went from
9.00.00.2980 to 9.00.00.3250

Hello Giga,

I'm glad it's not just me, it will be interesting to find out if other users
have the same problem.

Thanks for your feedback

I have the same problem on 2 PCs with XP Home Edition and SP2. I came here
hoping to find a solution. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Hello,

I have had problem since upgrading Windows to SP2, I think the service pack
has upgraded WMP as well so there must be a bug, have you installed SP2 or
has the problem just started happening on it's own.

Thanks

See the thread I started titled "Info Center View pane broken with XP SP2?"

This fix was e mailed to me, it seems to work for me:-

I noticed your question in the newsgroups, and I stumbled across a fix for
my system at least...

Go to your windows media player directory, find wmplayer.exe and copy it.
Paste it into the
same directory and rename it whatever... WMp.exe.....launch.exe...

Now when you launch it, it will show the info pane stuff again.

Not sure why it's doing this!

What a weird fix...

For some reason when I search your username, the only result is this subject.
Very weird.

SP2 does reinstall the latest version of WMP 9.

Your problem is most likely related to the Local Zone Lockdown change in
SP2. You can try these things:

1) adjust the new IE properties options: on the advanced tab, security
section, CHECK the lines "Allow active content from CDs..." and "Allow
active content to run in files on My Computer". [the 2nd one is most
likely to fix your issue].

2) if that doesn't restore the functionality you lost in WMP, try this
registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN]

change the value wmplayer.exe from 000001 to 00000.

This will turn off the lockdown in wmp entirely.

If these "fixes" solve your problem, good; but be aware that the new
local lockdown feature is intented to protect you from malware scripts
that try to run on your machine.

google for "local lockdown" for more info...

The "local lockdown" registry key is the culprit! I tried adjusting the IE
settings listed in steps 1 and 2, but neither had any affect (I adjusted 1,
rebooted, tried 2, rebooted, to no avail). But changing the Registry key is
what corrects the Info Center View. If it's 1, no displayed data. If it's 0,
the data displays. I switched this back and forth several times and the
relationship is definitely there.

I wonder what changed from SP2 Beta to SP2 production because this behavior
didn't happen until the production version. The Info Center View worked fine
in SP2 Beta.

Now I'm off to bring this to the attention of the Microsoft tech who's been
trying to help me fix this.

Thanks for the tip!

This solution worked for me, too. Thank you so much for posting it.

Microsoft needs to add this to their FAQ, knowledgebase and release an
update for SP2. There's no reason to enable this lockdown by default, and
since there's no simple way to reverse it, ordinary users will not be able to
fix this problem on their own.

That behavior is by design by default in XPSP2, since XPSP2 has increased
security by default, and WMP defaults into the more secure scheme which,
unfortunately, disables Info Center View.

I'll follow up with the right peoples about seeing where the status is with
regards to documentation of this. I'd think it is already documented, but
it's possible that the article is still in progress or something of that
sort.

The reason that the renaming of it works is that the registry lockdown does
not recognise the name so it does not lock it down.

In case you upgrade to WMP 10, the Info Center View is now in a different
location and it is tied to the music stores so should work without editing as
long as you live in USA. Otherwise, you cannot use it or the music stores -
too bad I live in New Zealand (damn you Bill).

I "fixed" the problem by unistalling windows XP [professional], reinstalling
it, and resisting temptation to download sp2!!!! Problem solved.
