Host laptop (winxp) is ok for emails and internet using broad band. It is
also ok to utilise files on second laptop (winxp) and the remote printer.
They communicate through a Belkin five port router and two lengths of Cat5e

switched off but no success. Ping one way but not the other - why? Help

We specialise in helping you avoid the white coat man. ;)

Switching a personal firewall off doesn't always produce the right results.
There are several other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your
problem. Read this article with an open mind.

You might do some basic diagnosis of the problem first.

And taking a look at "ipconfig /all" might give a clue or two.

also ok to utilise files on second laptop (winxp) and the remote printer.
They communicate through a Belkin five port router and two lengths of Cat5e

Still trying - I add that both computers show the connected icons in the
system tray and they both state that the system is connected BUT I still
cannot access the internet from the second computer.

The white coat has arrived but as yet is not donned by anyone.

Host laptop (winxp) is ok for emails and internet using broad band. It is
also ok to utilise files on second laptop (winxp) and the remote printer.
They communicate through a Belkin five port router and two lengths of Cat5e
cable. Second laptop will access shared files on host computer no problem

switched off but no success. Ping one way but not the other - why? Help
please before the white coat man arrives!!!!

Assuming you are using ICS, can you tracert 4.2.2.1? Go to command line, do "tracert 4.2.2.1". post back with the result.
