Small boxes appeared in my word document instead of text

I have been opening some of my word docs in Word 2003 in a filing in folder exercise, I have had to open my files in order to file them correctly, 90% of my files are OK, but about 10% of them are opening with small boxes throughout the document and no text. I have tried to open and repair but this has not worked, has anyone out there got a solution or could explain how this has happened
