Sluggish Windows Explorer

Hello there, hope you can help me.
I can't get my pc to wake up when I'm in WinEx. It's very sluggish and even
freezes. Every other application works fine but WinEx. I've run three
different anitvirus programs, I've cleared all the unecessary junk. I've even
gone to my starup menu to clear some stuff up. Defrag doesn't do a difference.

Any ideas?

Need more info, what is the disk use ratio, is the indexing turned on, is
the autorestore on and so forth...

Wabbit,
I have more than half of a 120G hd used. The indexing IS turned on, the
autorestore is on, virus programs up to date, the one thing I didn't do is
compress my files. Should I do that? According to the elapsed time indicator,
it looks like it would take at least seven hours to complete.

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit
Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard drive and how much free space?

What is your CPU processor speed? Right click on your My
Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get
this information and the amount of RAM memory.

Another avenue of enquiry is the Event Viewer System log.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

I've run two third party spyware programs. Every thing is fine in that aspect.

I should let you know that I've also installed and ran ShellXView. I've
disabled 'RealOne Player Context Menu Class' from the non-Windows Context
Menu description list. Since it's something I rarely use, I'd start with that
but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

The information about RAM memory and disk space are not indicating problems
in those areas,

The Event Viewer reports are interesting but you would do better to
concentrate
on Errors / Warnings from the System log for yesterday / today. Can you post
these.

One System Report dated 9 February 2006 indicates that the Office 2003
Service
Pack 2003 failed to install. Did you subsequently successfully install this
update.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

This sounds like you have a regular maintenance problem, you do not seem to
keep up wit it...

As to the other varous problem, before running after a red herring, may I
suggest that you concentrate on one problem at the time? The varous DLL
errors, the SP failing to install all point to the same thing: Maintenance.

Us program manager as suggested to check the CPU usage, the memory used and
the virtual memory level.

You need to restore order in your system before doing anything else. Be
logical, patient and perseverant.

I use anti-virus/spyware programs offered by my server. I also use two third
party spyware. I haven't had any events logged in my anti-virus program
because I keep it updated.

No, I did not install the update for Office 2003. I'd forgotten about it,
frankly.

What is the situation regarding keeping your computer to date?

It would seem that you do not have the latest shlwapi.dll file as
a more recent version was provided in January 2006.

Try Start, Help and Support, Keep your computer up-to-date with
Windows Update. Look at the History of Updates installed there.

You posted three Reports. Which, if any of these reports occur
a number of times?

Hi again Gerry,
Thanks so much for keeping up with me. I appreciate it.
My updates are automatic, but I did as you asked and one file was missing
though it didn't seem important, I downloaded it anyways. I installed The
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool.
I was putzing around in WinEx last night and noticed a significant
improvement in the performance. Now how did it get much better, I have no
idea, though I did install that registry software and disabled one of the
lesser used applications. Would that have done the trick?
This reminds me of my electronics work on planes. The problem is there, the
problem is there, the problem is there....voila, it's gone....and you haven't
done a thing to fix it, grrr.

What lesser used application did you disable?

Using automatic updates does not inevitably mean you get all that you want!

I prefer to control the updating process. In Start, Control Panel, Automatic
Updates I have Automatic not checked and have checked "Notify me but
don't automatically download or install". When notified I always commence
the process by selecting Start, Help and Support, Keep your computer
up-to-date with Windows Update and opt for a Custom install. I do not just
click on the Notication icon as you can lose control of the process.

There are a number of Microsoft update sites. You used to have to look at
the
Office Update site as well as the Windows XP site, although Microsoft have
new site putting these together.
