I'm running windows/xp. My pc has been running slow and sluggish for over 2
weeks now. Here are some of the symptoms:

*programs stop responding
*a lot of freezes and hangtime
*get error message when logging of
about #windows_gen#, whatever that means.

Troubleshooting measures taken:
*disk clean up
*defragmented files
*scan for spyware regularly with ADaware, Spybot S&D, Microsoft Anti-Spyware
Beta, and SpyDoctor
*delete old and unwanted files

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and select the Process Tab.
What is the Commit Charge? Two figures divided by backslash.

Have you ever downloaded any memory boosters or the like? Some web sites
can offer these and it can be easy to accept the offer when they are
best declined!

Has the hard disk been partitioned?

Try Start, Run, type regedit and hit OK. Then find the following in the
Registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management

What is the data shown for the "Pagingfiles" key? Do NOT try changing
anything in the Registry!

How is your hard disk formatted? FAT32 or NTFS?

Do you have the Intel Application Accelerator installed? If yes what
version? Select Start, Control Panel, Add/ Remove
Programs. There were problems associated with early versions.

Is there an Error Report in Event Viewer?

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A
workaround is copy and
paste the Error Report into an email, send it to yourself and print off
the copy in your
Inbox or your Sent Items folder.

Hope this helps.
