Slowed operation

Compaq desktop running XP Home. Some operations have slowed very
noticeably. For example, Quicken and AOL take minutes, instead of seconds,
to load. Disk is not defragmented and has more than 80% free space. Virus
scans yeild nothing. No changes to configuration that would account for
this. Task manager shows CPU usage at 100%, and shows a great many
"processes" running, but it's difficult to tell what they all are.
Any suggestions out there?
Thanks.

Run Defragmenter. An 80% free disk space is no indicator of where items are
for the remaining 20%. Won't hurt things.

I guess I didn't make it absolutely crystal unmistakeably clear that that
had been done already.
