slowdown

in start up, how can i tell which are unnecessary programs which are loading
up with names like ( svhost.exe & ctfmon.exe. where can i find out what this
apparent gobble de gook means, i don,t want to remove something that will
effect the running of my computer.

First, the critical rule when you are looking for services to disable is "If
you cannot find out what the service does or you do not understand it, DO
NOT TOUCH IT!!!" You can easily render your system inoperable by disabling
the wrong service.

The following website has a good list of most XP services as well as
excellent recommendations for enabling/disabling them depending on how you
use your computer.
