Anybody else experience this problem?

I guess I'd be a "heavy user" of the program... 10,000+ emails sent in the
last 6 months, at least that many rec'd... I'm noticing lately that when I
go to send an email - esp a long one, with mulitiple recipients - upon
clicking the send button, WM takes an awfully long time to "think" as it
processes the command and then is free again to do another task. A long
email will take 7 seconds of thinking... long email with mult recipients
will be more than 10 seconds of thinking.

Any solutions? I've compacted my folders... many times...

btw - I do not use any incompatible AV programs and certainly don't have AV
processing my mail...

You've probably answered your own question.
Windows Mail was not designed for such heavy duty use.
You'd be better off with Outlook.
