Slowdown in (Un)install of programs

Eric

Hi,

I'm using Vista Business on a 17 " Dell Notebook with the following spec:

- 120 GB HDD
- Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo 1.66GHz
- 1 GB RAM
- 256MB ATI Radeon X1400

I'm having major problems with the speed of installing and uninstalling
programs in my new copy of Vista. It took 40 minutes today to initialise
the uninstall of Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.0 this morning. I have a similar
problem with the decompression of archives (like .zip and .rar files).
Everything else runs really smooth and I've had very few problems.

I thought it might be a problem with my security settings, but I don't think
it's my antivirus software as the problem was around before I installed it.
In any case, I'm using AVG Free.

Any suggestions to speed up the process?
Thanks,
Eric

There could be many problems. Specifically you're borderlining the minimum
requirements of the system to problems like this won't be uncommon.

My guess is when you're (un)installing programs it's the index updating to
reflect that. The index is what makes searching Vista so fast on areas where
the hard drive has been indexed... But it's a very lengthy process (Indexing
your entire hard drive can take days). You could disable file indexing, but
if you do your searches will take much longer and your disk will fragment
more often.
