Slow XP login without network or on wireless

Hi,

I am experiencing slow XP (home SP2) logins on my laptop, where XP will
sit still for up to a few minutes after selecting a user before
proceeding to load personal settings etc.

Login is speedy on a wired ethernet connection (peer to peer, no
domain), but slow without network hooked up (and wireless off), or when
using wireless. Wireless amounts to no network for this problem, as it
only registers on the AP when the desktop has loaded (can I change this
for a Centrino laptop?)

After a delayed login, the event log shows one error from MPnotify.exe
that is otherwise absent, but I have been unable to troubleshoot this
application

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: (100)
Event ID: 1000
Date: 3/1/2005
Time: 8:06:42 PM
User: N/A
Computer: XXXX
Description:
Faulting application mpnotify.exe, version 5.1.2600.0, faulting module
NTDLL.DLL, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00010370.

No other problems in the event log. No spyware that I am aware of (swept
with AdAware and MS antispyware).

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? It seems that MPNOTIFY
looks for something for a while, times out with an error and lets login
proceed... Or maybe it is something else...

Thanks for any suggestions,

Martijn

Fairly normal. I got around the problem by manually assigning IP numbers,
gateways and DNS server numbers. Now my wi-fi comes up in less than 3
seconds and to give you an idea what I am talking about, I have a P4 3.4ghz
with 1gig ram as the fastest machine here and on the wi-fi network the
slowest machine is a P3 1.13Ghz with 256megs ram, all XPSP2.

Suggest you try manually assigning, too. One other thing you might consider
is a site survey. If you are using a channel used by some other wi-fi
network in range, you could be having extended trouble there. You would
benefit by changing the channel.

Hi,

Well, I'd rather stick to DHCP as I use my laptop(daily) at different
locations with different gateway adresses etc. Manually swapping that
around would be a pain, more so than the slow login. (I'll try it anyway
to see whether the laptop waits for DHCP or seeks for some unknown server)

In terms of the wifi: I don't think the WiFi is slow in connecting or
something like that. The service or whatever only starts up when the
user desktop is activated. Maybe it uses user profile specific info for
WEP keys, or stuff like that. When the desktop is up, shutting down the
WiFI radio and reenabling results in a very fast reconnect to the AP
and DHCP address assignment, with strong signals.

Thanks for your input,

Martijn

Try this: http://www.netswitcher.com/product_info.htm and then you can have
it both ways with ease.

Does this maybe look relevant?

Note that you have to call PSS for this - but they shouldn't charge you for
the call. Perform a full backup first just in case....
