Slow W2K server

Hi experts

I am experiencing a condition which I have no direct control over, but am definitely affected by.

I am a database developer and I have developed a MS Access database that lives locally on each of 12 workstations. This database interfaces with a second MS Access database and a proprietary database via ODBC on a W2K server

The latency to retrieve a data record varies by the day: 2 seconds one day, 35 seconds the next, 10 seconds the next etc..

Before you direct me to the MS Access newsgroup, I have one additional piece of info that I have experienced while troubleshooting this problem: On more than one occasion I have opened "My Computer" and waited in excess of 30 seconds watching the "flashlight" locate the mapped network drives. Were it not for this, I would probably still be beating my head against the wall trying to find the problem in my database creation

Unfortunately, I am not privvy to the server closet, so I can't provide much information about the hardware, other than the network is 100bT ethernet running on a single-Intel-processor, rack-mount server

I need some possible causes for this latency to present to my client so I can, at least, open a dialog with their IT contractor. If I can do this much, then I'll get more info to work with and possibly post here

Thanks in advance..

It is possible, considering the "my computer" search that there is a DNS
issue with the AD domain, which would affect client server communication.

I would see if you can get the IS department to check their DNS set up and
see if it follows MS suggestions.
See:
Setting Up the Domain Name System for Active Directory

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;237675

If they were giving AD clients the IP address of the DNS server AND the
ISP's DNS server, instead of just the DNS server set up for AD, you might
experience intermittent network delays.
