slow to scroll

P

PB

I've just done a complete re-install to XP2, reformatted to NTFS.

The PC is quite low spec 400 ghz processor , 256 mb memory.

But when I use word (especiually ) to scroll through a document is
either slow or very jerky, ie stop start etc.

Also scrolling through drop down boxes s slow especially a box where
you have to choose your country

Any ideas please

other posts suggest this may be the video driver, I've look at hardware
devices and find the yellow question mark on VGA .

I've downloaded the driver but whenever I try to install the driver,
the wizard can't find it, even though I tell it where to go.

Is there a generic driver or how can I resolve my yellow ?

Thanks

Where did you get the driver? Get drivers from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

What video card do you have?

Pc is quite old, it was built to order, so OEM doesn't apply.

Belarc doesn't give any info on the "Display"

Don't know what the graphics card is.

I was trying to install the monitor which is new to the PC. forgot to
discriminate between monitor and graphics card

I'm nowdownloading Aida32 to see if it turns up anything new

Probably the easiest thing to do with such an old machine is buy a new
video card. Hardware doesn't last forever and your card may have died.
You can get a basic one for very little money - under $30USD. Uninstall
the old one (if it doesn't show up, don't worry about this step), shut
down the computer and with it unplugged open the case and install the
new video card. Reboot and install drivers per instructions that come
with the card.

You want at least 512 ram for XP. Preferrably, 1 gig.

sadly I was also coming to this conclusion ie buy a new card, but
having been to the local shops the only card I can buy is a gaming card
for the equivilant of $100 (I am in Africa, postal service demands i
have to buy loclly)

is there anything I can do do give the exsisting graphics card a final
try.

That does make it difficult. Post back and tell me what Aida32 says
about your graphics card. Then tell me what drivers you downloaded,
where you got them, and how you installed them. Perhaps you got the
wrong drivers, didn't install them correctly, etc.

It is worth trying that first since it doesn't cost anything. There is
absolutely no point in putting in a "gaming card" in that machine.

ok I've made a little bit of progress (thanks for agreeing there in no
point in a gaming card, if I need to spend that much on a card, i might
as well upgrade the whole machine as it has aslow processor/memory etc)

Anyway the card is a S3 Trio 2 (3D/2X) 362-368. the info was on the
underside of the card which i could see when i turned the box on its
side.

This card doesn't seem to have XP drivers. I've searched.

The card used to work on XP 1, I've had this trouble since XP2

Given the Pc is only used for Word/Powerpoint and email, is there some
utility driver i could use instead. I have the original CD but when I
try to install from it, it says the drivers aren't XP approved (or
something similar) and refuses to install them

Many thanks for your help so far, it is very much appreciated

I found these for Windows 2000 on DriverGuide:
http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=52196

They might work. If you need to log into DG, the username is driver2 and
the password is all.

This site has more information:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/s33dtrio.html and here's a link
for the beta Win2k/XP drivers:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/s33dxpsecdownload.html

I got these sites by Googling "drivers XP S3 Trio 2 3D/2X". There may be
other sites. Please be very careful if you are going to these sites on
a Windows machine. I use Linux and Firefox, and one of the links (not
the ones I've given you above) opened a separate unrequested
advertising tab in spite of my "no popups" setting, so you just don't
know what Evil may try to hijack your browser. Use Firefox with popups
denied and not IE and be careful.

If those drivers don't solve your issue, then the card has probably died
and there's no software solution for hardware failure.

Good luck,

Malke

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Just to report that above link for XP driver (beta) produced a driver
that brought the graphics card back to life.

So i've now got a functioning PC!

Many thanks for the help
