Slow tansfer speeds over a home network

I've set up a network between my laptop and my desktop and
I need to transfer approx 6gb of data from my laptop to my
desktop using a crossover cable. the desktop recognises
the shared files but when I go to copy them across the
transfer speed drops to about 12Kbps (Yes, thats Kbps).
Using my broadband connection I am getting approx 58Kbps
on my laptop but using the same connection on my desktop
will give me a speed of only 10-13 Kbps. I've set and
reset the duplex modes on both PCs. I've even replaced my
network card on my desktop just in case it was faulty. The
bottleneck is obviously on my desktop but I can't figure
out where.
Both machines run XP Home.
My desktop is a Dell, 1.6ghz, 768mb SDRAM with approx 30gb
of free space.

Hi Ag3nt,
Thanks for the reply. I don't think the crossover cable is
the problem as I originally took the files from another
laptop using the same cable. It took just 15 minutes.
When I'm on the net I use a high spec CAT6 cable and it
works fine on my laptop but not on my desktop. Any other
ideas????

If you surf the net for CAT5 or CAT6 ethernet cables you
should be able to find one with sufficient bandwith
capabilities.

Surf the net for a CAT 5 or CAT 6 cable? Whatever for? Every computer store
sells a variety of lengths of high-spec high-quality cables at dirt cheap
prices, with the RJ-45 connectors installed.
