Slow Spreadsheet

I have a workbook that suddenly takes forever to load/open
and even longer to close. Even with no variable
information inserted, it's a nightmare to access. I
cannot find anything to check or compress the file itself.

I have run across before and had to recreate the entire
workbook. I would prefer to avoid this if at all
possible, due to the size of this spreadsheet.

Any help or advice you can offer will be greatly
Appreciated.

Journaling:
If you use Outlook (not talking about Outlook Express) on your system
you may have turned on Journaling (logging of open/close).

If you are not sure do not open Outlook because that would cause it
to be installed if you don't have it; instead, use Windows Start, Run
and type outlook.exe into the box. If you get components not found
then you do not have Outlook so can't have a Journaling problem; otherwise,...

The general recommendation in the Excel groups (and MS KB 167081)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=167081 is to turn journaling off.
In Outlook 97: Tools / Options / Journal / uncheck Microsoft Excel and all other
MS Office Products (Select all, delete)
In Outlook 98: Tools/Options/Preferences/Journal Options

Save As:
Do not save as multiple versions of Excel

Clean out Temporary Internet Files
Many have reported this to be a problem. from Internet Explorer: tools, internet, general (tab), delete files,
include all files unless you specifically do want to keep offline content.
