Slow Southbridge PATA on P4C800 E D

Hi all

I have always wondered about strange look of the results from Hd tune
when I tested my PATA bootdisk. The speed curve is constant about
28MB/s, burst speed is also 28MB. The drive is Maxtor 6Y080P0 with 8MB
cache. Cable is ok. All caches and dma are on. Mode was udma2. Udma2?

I changed the drive to the Promise connector and speed results rised to
60-30MB/s. And the result is now a normal falling curve. Burst speed
rose also to some 100MB.

What is wrong there?

Regards
LM

28 MB/s burst (and other) speed is consistent with UDMA2. If the cable
is a good 80-wire IDE cable, check that it was correctly installed --
with the MB connector in the MB and the HD at the far end of the cable.

Also, you may want to download the diagnostic/utility from www.maxtor.com
to see if it finds anything bogus.

I checked the cable and its connections several times. No help.

Is Udma2 same as UltraDma100 Asus manual seems to give as Southbridge
Pata speed?

UDMA2 = UDMA/33 = 33 MB/s. With 33.3 MB/s as the peak data rate, 28 MB/s is
about all you can get, even for burst speed as reported by HDtach.

And, that UDMA2 is, indeed, limiting your HD's performance. I don't
know why
it only gets U/33 instead of U/100. I note that my P4C800ED also reports
U/33 instead of U/100, but it doesn't matter for me since I only use that
channel for a DVD burner, and U/33 is good enough for that.

Strange. I wonder is there anyone who has this ide running at full
speed.

I cant find any drivers for Southbridge, what I found I updated.
Article "http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817472" mentioned slowing
hard disks, but the trick didnt help.

By the way, primary IDE seems to be 133MB/s type. And secondary 100M.
Why do you have DVD burner in primary IDE?

My DVD burner is the only PATA widget on this PC. The HDs are SATA.
