slow showing folder contents

My computer is very slow to propogate the folder contents when there are alot
of files contained in them. It is a P4 with 1GB of memory running win xp. I
have other older, slower computers connected to the network that access the
same folders at least 10x faster. What could be the problem?
 
Try Error Checking the drive. Rightclick the drive icon, Properties, Tools
tab.
