Slow running PC

F

felim McCarthy

I have reinstalled the operating system of my Advent PC
from PC World.
It is now running very slowly with the frequent stops as
if it has run out of memory. Thihs is in spite of the fact
that it is running with 512Mb RAM and with a 80 Gb Hard
disk as the main system disk
When I reinstalled the operation system Windoiws XP Home
edition, I put the other programmes onto a D HDD which is
140 Gb

Any Suggestions

When the PC starts up what mode for the hard drive is
reported?

UDMA mode 5 is ATA 100, and UDMA mode 6 is the higher ATA
133.

You probably have an ATA 100 0r ATA 133 drive, so if a
lower mode is reported, then the drive isn't working in
its fastest mode.

See this article if PIO mode is reported:

Otherwise check that the cluster size being used is
correct.
