slow responses from XP...

Hello,

This problem has been plaguing me for a long time and I've yet to find a
solution. Windows XP Pro is very slow when launching applications and it
can take up to 20 seconds at times before the application will even start to
load. The problem is not isolated any application in particular as it
occurs with everything ranging from the simple applications such as task
manager or Explorer and larger apps like Paint Shop Pro and Word/Excel. Once
the application loads everything runs smoothly. The system itself is more
than adequate as I'm running a P4 3GHz with 1GB RAM. I am running a (very)
small network (1 Win2k box and this XP box) connected through a router.
This is actually where I think the problem lies....my best guess is that
it's trying to access or search for something across the network when I
attempt to launch a program. Win2k runs flawlessly and I do not see the
same problems on it.

any thoughts or comments appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg

try to do that then let us know xsoftspy.

I forgot to add that in my original post. Nothing abnormal is running and
eating up the CPU. At the time of launching applications the system is idle
and the only thing "using" the CPU is the system idle process. I am also
very confident in saying that my computer(s) is spyware/virus free (but I do
routinely run both antivirus/spyware scanners).

Hi.

I'm experiencing the same problem I think.

I can't find where the source is but I'm almost sure the system is hanging
somewhere in the networking stack almost every time an application is
launched. The process appears to launch immediately as reported by Task
Manager but the UI doesn't come up before several seconds or even minutes at
times.

When I disable the network card, the system behaves like an F15 with double
afterburner at full blast. OK, a bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I
mean - the symptoms disappear (with no networking functionality, of course).

I uninstalled all sorts of applications which I thought may have been
messing with XP's networking private parts, but to no avail. I also
uninstalled BitDefender temporarily but had no luck.

Does anyone know of any monitoring utility that exposes the goings-on in the
networking stack? I have a hunch something like this would find the culprit.

Regards,

Frank

Hi Frank,

That sounds identical to my problem. I disabled my NIC for most of today
and the problem disappeared as well, so there is something weird going on
within the networking stack as you think.
