Slow response bringing up 'My Computer'

I just got a Dell 8400 and am having a minor problem that may actually be
bigger than I think,

When I select 'My Computer', the Window comes up immediately, but it takes
2-4 seconds for the disk info to come up. Once it does come up, it take
another couple of seconds before I can click on a device, (Disk C), and see
the contents.

After this initial delay, everything seems to work fine, until I close the
window and bring it up again. Then the same thing happens - every time I
select 'My Computer'.

I'm thinking that it may be something in my network setup. I have this
computer and a laptop set up on an ethernet connection and use Direcway
Satellite for Internet communications.

The Dell has a 3.4Ghz processor, 1 GB memory, 1 160GB hard drive, and 1 80Gb
drive. It also has two optical devices and a card reader with three slots.
There are several options to select from the My Computer' window but I have
this delay each time. Can someone point me to a culprit?

Hi Don,

Check that you have the latest drivers for the card reader. I had a similar
problem with a USB Compact Flash reader once - it slowed the My Computer
window right down.
If possible, try disconnecting the card reader (if it's plugged into the
motherboard, make a careful note of where & how the plug is orientated) - if
the problem still appears with the reader unplugged, then this is a red
herring. Of course, unplug and re-connect it only when the PC is OFF.

Hope this helps..

Kelly,

Sorry to take so long to get back to you, but I got involved in other
things.

I tried all of your suggestions and I still have the delay when selecting My
Computer. I have gone back over what I have done since getting the computer
and can't think of anything that would cause it. Is there some way that I
can reset ALL network settings to defaults? I know that I set a couple that
probably didn't do what I was attempting to accomplish but got distracted
and didn't reset them. That is probably not it, buty I can't think of
anything else.
