Slow Reponse when designing forms

I am experiencing a nagging slow response time when using the design mode in
forms and reports in Access 2003. When I click on any item in the
form/report, there is a 5-10 second delay before the item will show
highlighted and I can make any changes to size, position, etc. This is not
isolated to 1 database; I seem to find it in numerous applications I work in.
I have tried moving from my network to a local copy and get the same
response. I have removed all data from tables, compacted and repaired; same
slow response. I have uninstalled and re-installled access and still see the
same thing. Other applications work fine - I am working on a 3 year old
laptop, but still is a fairly decent machine. Any thoughts on what could be
causing the delay? Is seems to be limited to design mode in forms and
reports. Queries run just fine in the databases.

Check a few things:

Try opening a table in the front end (that is linked to the back end), and
minimize it.

Now try working on a form, or report. Your delays should go away.

In addition, check your default printer, since if it is a network printer,
then again ms-access grabs info for layout (both forms + reports do this),
and this can cause a lot of traffic

So, check the above....

And, remember, you do need to keep open a persistent connection when the
application runs also, as this also eliminates large delays in application
load, and run times...

and, another list of "got ya's" to check can be found here:

....and...post back on what happened when you tried the above...

good luck!!

Take a look at the Access Performance FAQ by Tony Toews, at:
http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/performancefaq.htm

Work through each of the items Tony lists, in turn, until you find your
issue. Name AutoCorrect and subdatasheets would be the place to start.

You may not be able to solve the issue for reports based on crosstab queries
where the Column Headings are not pre-defined, because Access has to run the
query to completion before it knows which columns will be available for
report design. You should be able to make all other design cases
instantaneous.

Luke, did you ever find a solution for this problem? I'm having this issue
as well -- it seems to be related to the printer, because the design mode and
print preview for the report behaves differently depending upon which printer
I've selected..
