I installed WIN XP SP2 and now computer speed has ground to a HALT. The only
other software installed was from the MS windows update website and live
updates from Symantec for Norton AV and Internet Security.

How can I fix?

Thanks,
Maddie

What processes in Task Manager are taking up resources?
Anything in your Event Logs?
When was the last time you scanned for spyware?

Hi,

First try disabling the antivirus and internet security software and then
monitor the computer. If it is on a network than dissconnect it from the
network and than check.

From my experience Norton Internet Security was the problem - it uses too
many of your computer resources. I switched to Avast AV and use Windows XP
Firewall, and Ad Aware. I have a wireless router which has a built in
firewall. I think these internet security programs are just getting too top
heavy with all of the different processes such as Spam Alerts, Popup
Blockers, AV, Email scanners, etc , etc, etc. I used Norton for quite a
number of years and have decided not to continue. I then went to AVG AV with
no problems until at th end of December 2004 they too decided to bring out a
one in all Internet Security Program and it to slowed down my computer. I
wish that the companies that supply these programs would learn that, " if it
works stop fixing it !! " I don't have any difficulty running with SP2.

I have run both SP2 installed over my system and after a crash as a fresh
install directly over a fresh install of Windows XP Home Edition. No issues
were noted.
