Slow performance

Hello,

I am getting really slow windows performance. Tasks that don't do anything
for few minutes e.g. Internet Explorer etc. I am running a AMD 64 3200+ with
512MB and would expect everything to load and perform well.

When I look at task manager, the CPU is normally really low, some processes
sit there and don't do anything, and some eat processor speed.

Any ideas whats going on?

Thanks in advance,
Simon

Check for unneded background services at:
Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services

If there's something you don't need (like indexing, perhaps),
either Disable it or set it to Manual startup and Stop it. Do
this cautiously and one by one so that you can associate the
observed effects with what you recently shut down.

Unfortunately, it could be a lot of things. From a software standpoint,
have you scanned with a current av using updated definitions? Have you
scanned for malware? Done the usual maintenance like emptying Temp and
Temporary Internet Files? Made sure you don't have a lot of unnecessary
processes running?

On the hardware side, check to see that your hard drive is using DMA and
not PIO. Do this by going to Device Manager and expand IDE ATA./ATAPI
Controllers. Double-click the entry for your hard drive (the Primary)
and look on the Advanced tab.

What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

Hello, Simon !

Did you manage the problem ? I am facing a similar problem.
I am using an IBM Laptop (Centrino), XP Home, SP2 (with latest updates), AVG
Anti-virus, Spybot & Adaware (all with latest definitions).
None of the programs open up after connecting to the Internet. It takes
alomst 10 minutes for all programs to start functioning again.

Ashit

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and select the Process Tab.
What is the Commit Charge?

Thanks, Gerry.
Once connected to the Internet, even the Task Manager takes 10 min. to open
up.
Actually, I may have solved the problem.
Taking the cue from Timothy's solution, I tried stopping the "Universal Plug
& Play" Service. Now everything seems to work fine.
Could this have been the problem ?

You did not answer my question.

What is the Commit Charge?

I tried stopping the "Universal Plug & Play" Service. Now everything
seems to work fine. Could this have been the problem ?

I doubt it!

You could get commit charge figures with the Universal Plug & Play"
Service stopped and then with it started for comparison.

The commit charge details when UP&P stopped is 369688

The commit charge details when UP&P started is 370152 and keeps increasing.
As I finish writing this it is now 374216.

Actually, there was one more thing I did do - I uninstalled the IPV6 (TCP/IP
Version 6). So maybe this was the problem ??

Thanks for all your help.

Ashit

The Commit Charge is two figures divided by a forward slash. You have
only given one figure in each case, which is unhelpful.

Gerry - Sorry ! The figures are 369688/640716 (Before) &
370152/640716 (After). I think it was the IPV6 protocol. After having
uninstalled it, all seems ok.

Your virtual memory settings would appear to be incorrect. What have you
entered? Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop, and select
Properties, Advanced, Performance -Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory,
Change. What do you see there?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? In Windows Explorer
place the cursor on the drive, right click and select Properties.

I am away in the next hour until Monday.

In Virtual Memory - Space Available 2359MB. (The Laptop has 256MB Ram
installed)
Custom size - Initial size - 384MB, Max. Size 768 MB
Hard Disk Capacity - Total size - 14.7GB, Free Space - 1.92GB
I think 5MB is allocate for the WinXP Preload.

Ashit

256 mb RAM is sufficient RAM for some users needs but in your case if
you are regularly getting a Commit Charge of the like of 370,152 /
640,716
then you need to increase the RAM memory installed.

Yo have said you have an IBM Laptop. What is the model?

You are also running your system with only 15% free space. This is
minimal and your system would benefit if you could increase the amount
of free space.

Try running Disk CleanUp. Start, All Programmes, Accessories, Disk
CleanUp, More Options, and click on System Restore to remove all but the
latest restore point. Also use Disk CleanUp to remove Temporary Internet
Files and to Empty the Recycle Bin. Then run Disk Defragmenter.
