slow performance with SP2

M

After installing SP2 my computer's performance is
extremely slow, especially on the internet. I have
written Microsoft and have been waiting for a reply for
some time. Anyone else have this problem and know how to
fix it? I have defragged, cleaned up temp files, checked
for spyware, etc. all the usual maintenance.

Turn off the firewall,control panel,secutrity center,turn
off the firewall.Give that a try,if you have a firewall
from a third party like Zone-Alarm,or Norton,it will
conflict with the XP SP2 firewall.Somewhere on the update
site it has a message telling us not to run more than one
firewall at a time.

What aspect is slow?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? Is your hard disk
partitioned? How much RAM memory?

Did you try removing restore points -Disk CleanUp, More Options?

Thanks for the advice, but I had already turned off all
other firewalls with the exception of the Windows one.
Still very slow.

The computer runs generally slower in all areas, but,
especially when I am on the internet. I have about 89%
free space on my hard disk so that should not be a
problem. My hard disk is partitioned so I have a small
amount used for backup-factory-installed software,etc. I
ahve 512 MB RAM. My computer was running great prior to
the SP2 installation. It is only a couple of months old.

I have a brand new laptop, and after I installed SP2 the
performance died. The CPU is pegged at 100% all the time.
I haven't been able to find a fix for it yet. If you find
anything let me know. I've even reloaded the system and
tried again witht he smae results.

Yes I have. And, by the way, Microsoft has been no help
whatsoever. They claim to have free support for SP2 but
take days to get back to you and don't even answer the
original questions. If anyone has heard of anything else
I can do, please let me know. Otherwise, I am going to
uninstall or do a system restore to get back to when my
computer was actually running smoothly. Some update, huh?

Had the same problem.

There is something about windows firewall re-activiating
when you disable it.

I had performance problems with Halo PC. Disabled the
firewall for Halo, which instantly increased my
performance. After next reboot the firewall setting was
just like I left it but performance was decreased again,
so I completely disabled the firewall-which brought back
my performance...until I rebooted the system. I did a
complete re-install of windows xp/formatted my HD, and
installed SP2. Performance was back for a while, then the
whole thing started again, only this time before I made
changes I created a gaming profile. So now I only have to
switch back to the default profile, to get my performance
back...windows is real screwy
