My XP Home Edition has become slower and slower. It has started freezing, and
then showing "program not responding" and eventually i have to boot out. I
just installed McAfee Antivirus, and it seems to have made it worse! Slow
start up and navigation, internet, etc. HELP!!!

Hi there,

I would really need to see a Hijackthis Log file to try to help you figure
out what's wrong.
Download it and save it to it's own folder, then run it from there and
select scan and save a log file.
Either post the contents of that logfile here or email it to me mark at
livetechsupport.ca

You can download hijackthis here
http://download.hijackthis.eu/hijackthis_199.zip

I suspect your system maybe laden with spyware and/or viruses, or maybe you
are just running too many processes, either way the log will help us
determine the next steps required.

hi thanx, but what do you mean by "running too many processes" I am only
pulling up one program!

You may have one physical program open, but your computer has alot of
processes and programs running in the background.

That's not surprising. McAfee is a poor performer, and is among the worst
(along with Norton) security products on the market.

If you just installed it, does that mean you formerly had no anti-virus
protection? And what about spyware protection. Are you running any
anti-spyware products at all?

Slow start up and navigation, internet, etc.

The single most common thing these days that accounts for what you're
describing is malware infestation, and that's what I would suspect in your
case. I recommend that you go to Malke's Malware Removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and follow
the instructions there.

Alexia;
Start here:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

If you get to the point where you run HijackThis, it is better to post to a
recognized forum as suggested in the link rather then posting here or sent
to someone privately you do not know.
This newsgroup is not appropriate for a HijackThis log and a private
individual lacks the peer review available in the proper forum.

Was only trying to help, but at the same time I see your point JJ.
I still firmly believe a hijackthis log is the best place to start with a
slow computer though, it can usually help you pinpoint the issues
immediately.

Thank you i will try it right now! I wasn't running anything, until McAfee,
and spyware? AHHHH! i thought that that program covered everything.... good
thing it's only a 90 day trial? Can u recommend any programs that are "normal
joe" friendly? I mean i'm not downloading oodles of stuff, i just use the PC
for school, and a few other things, but nothing to make my PC go crazy? Is
anyone susceptable to this "malware, etc?" Oh I also use LIMEWIRE, but after
downloading songs, i put them on an MP3, and out of the PC.... running that
program I've heard can still muck with the PC? THANX AGAIN!

I recommend dumping McAfee and using a combination of the following security
programs (all freeware):

ZoneAlrm firewall
Avast Antivirus
Spyware Blaster
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware.

Sorry, I meant to add that although are my personal choices, there are other
good alternatives too.
