Slow opening Word/Excel-files over network

E

Emil

Hi,
Users that use XP are having trouble opening Word and
Excel-files (probably other programs too) on our network
shares. Sometimes it takes minutes before they can start
edit a file.
The fileserver is a W2K server and the clients have SP1
installed.

Users that use WNT and W2K does not have these problems.

What can possible be wrong?

TIA
Emil

Check that the anti-virus software is not the root cause.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Hi Rob,
Unfortunately i don't think that's the problem. I've
tried both to disable and uninstalled it.
It's strange because it works fine opening files for
about an hour, then the problem starts.
Works fine opening files locally though.

I'll state the obvious with the hope that it helps. *Something* changes
after "about an hour". What might it be? Network congestion? Some sort
of nevarious program on the XP machine(s)? Something is changing.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Anyone using autosense on the NIC properties? Change them all to a
hard-coded speed/duplex setting and see if it helps.

Also - in a command line, type

net use <enter>

and see if there are any drives mapped to inaccessible shares. If so, you'll
usually have a lot of slowness when clicking on file | open in your apps.
Delete the incorrect mappings if that's the case.
