Slow opening program

I have XP Pro with 1.7mHz processor and 256Mb ram and the machine works
fairly quickly. Until recently all the programs were opening fine, but now I
am having a problem with just the Office programs. WORD and EXCEL take an
age to open, once open they work at the usual speed, they were never like
this before, other programs don't seem to be affected.

I use the XP firewall, run an updated AVG, regularly run things like
ScanSpyware and Spybot, both of which find nothing.

Anybody have any idea what could be causing this?

Maybe your virus firewall effect your office, please disable your
firewall and try again.

Try Defragmenting your hard drive?

It sounds like your system is free of other mess. Sometimes "On-Demand
Scanning" can slow down operations as every file opened has to be
scanned along with anyfiles linked to it (in the case of word / excel
dll files and and plugins)

Try disabling AVG On demand scanning.

Dont disable your firewall as suggested above, Office has no need to
connect to the internet and does NOT check for updates on startup so
this is not required.

Automatically repair Office programs

Applies to: Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, FrontPage,
Publisher, OneNote, InfoPath

In Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, how do I restore
the installation to its original state?

First, that's highly unlikely that that's his problem.

Second, it's highly irresponsible to suggest to someone that they disable
their firewall--even for a short time--unless the advice is accompanied by a
warning to first disconnect the internet connection. It takes only seconds
for an unprotected computer to get infected with things like Blaster and
Sasser.
