Slow opening of Accessories in Start menu

After I have used IE6 or Acrobat Reader (these are the only two instances so
far) when I attempt to access "Accessories" using the
start menu the computer freezes with the hard-disk working, apparently
flat-out
loading the Accessories menu. After about a minute the hard-disk activity
finishes and the Accessories menu opens up as normal. This happens every
time I access "Accessories" after using IE6 (and also, I have now
discovered, after using Acrobat Reader). I am up to date with all Windows
Updates.
Any suggestions anyone?
(Windows XP home, IE6 + Office 2000).

Only a basic troubleshooting idea:

create subfolders under accessories (1 subfolder per item) and move each shortcut into its own subfolder. Then determine which one of those is hanging.
